Real Madrid defeated Manchester City 3-1 in the match that was held between them on Wednesday evening at the “Santiago Bernabeu” in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals for the current season 2021-2022.
The goals of the match came through Riyad Mahrez in the 73rd minute for City, while the Brazilian Rodrygo scored two goals, and Karim Benzema scored in the 90th, 91st, and 95th minutes, respectively.
The original time between the two teams ended with Real Madrid leading 2-1, which prompted the two parties to resort to the extra time that witnessed Karim Benzema’s goal from a penalty kick.
Real Madrid set a date with Liverpool on May 28 at the Stade de France in the French capital, Paris, to be the second final between them after the famous meeting that brought them together in the 2018 season.
Riyad Mahrez has so far scored 24 goals in all competitions for Manchester City this season. Only Mohamed Salah (30) scored more goals for the Premier League team in 2021-22.
Karim Benzema has scored 10 goals in the knockout stages of the Champions League this season, which is the most a player has scored in a single season alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2016-2017 season, also with Real Madrid.
Phil Foden also made his 36th Champions League appearance this evening, with Cesc Fabregas (42) and Kylian Mbappe (40) now the only players to achieve more in the competition when he was aged 21 or younger.
Rodrygo became the first Brazilian player to score a double in the Champions League semi-final since Lucas Moura did so for Tottenham against Ajax in 2019.
Rodrygo also became the first player to score two goals in the 90th minute of a Champions League knockout match.
The first leg match between Real Madrid against Manchester City, which was held last week at Al-Ittihad Stadium, ended 4-3 in a crazy meeting that brought the two teams together, with the Champions League semi-final first leg.
Historically, Manchester City faced Real Madrid in the Champions League in 7 matches, with the two teams winning three games each, and a draw in one match.
In 2012, in the Champions League group stage, the two teams met for the first time, and then Real Madrid decided the match in his favour, with a score of 3-2, after which the two teams tied positively in the return match with a goal for each team.
Manchester City met Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the 2016 season, and the first leg ended in a goalless draw, and Real Madrid succeeded in the return meeting in eliminating Manchester City after winning it with a clear goal.
Manchester City’s confrontations with Real Madrid were renewed, when they played in the round of 16, and City achieved a surprise by winning the match with two goals against a goal, and scored for Real Madrid at the time Isco, while De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus scored the goals of the City.
In the return match, Al-Ittihad Stadium witnessed the defeat of Real Madrid again, as the result of the first leg was repeated, to qualify for the quarter-finals at the expense of Real. City’s goals came with the feet of Jesus and Sterling, while Benzema scored Real’s only goal.
The last meeting was when they met in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Champions League, which ended in favor of City during the current season 2021-2022.
