According to the company, two good years have passed for the Nintendo Switch, with the Switch family seeing the strongest sales in October so far in the country this year.
The gaming tablet has been the best-selling gaming console in the United States for the past 23 months, outperforming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The overall sales of the gaming platform – 68.3 million worldwide – exceeded that of the NES platform.
Nintendo sold more than 735,000 Switch and Switch Lite platforms in the United States during the month of October, while it has so far sold 22.5 million units in the United States.
“That’s a 136 percent increase compared to the same month last year,” says the company. “We’re excited about our momentum,” says Nick Chavez, vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo America.
Chavez attributes the big increase in October to better out-of-stock supplies, as it has often been difficult to find the Switch on store shelves this year in particular.
The demand was compounded by the pandemic and the massive success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which saw the company witness unprecedented demand for the Nintendo Switch throughout the year.
The timing of the announcement is interesting as this week also saw the launch of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.
As the holiday season approaches, competition increases, which could lead to Nintendo Switch losing the title of the best-selling gaming console in the United States over the past 23 months.
Nintendo has a few big releases to boost its success, including Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.
The company believes it does not have to enter direct competition with Sony and Microsoft.
Chavez says: It is always exciting for new gaming consoles to enter the video game market, and it is great for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X platforms to come to the market, and we believe that the Nintendo Switch occupies a completely different position, and has a unique offer for shoppers and gamers.
