German coach Jurgen Klopp confirmed that his players deserved the League Cup title, after defeating a fierce competitor the size of the Chelsea team, on penalties, 11-10, after the end of the original and extra time in a goalless draw, in the final match that brought them together at Wembley Stadium.
After the match, Klopp said: “We deserved to win the cup, a difficult match, but it’s okay, we won the title, and if it wasn’t for the infiltration, 12 goals would have been scored in the match.”
He added, “Chelsea fought hard, when you watch their matches, you know that they are a difficult and strong defensive team, and the penalty kicks were very enthusiastic.”
He continued, “Happy to our fans here and all over the world, I hope you enjoyed the match, this tournament is yours, you are the foundation of this club, and I hope we made you happy.”
He concluded, “I am happy to achieve this title for the first time in a long time for the club.”
Chelsea vs Liverpool
The two teams exchanged attacks in the ninety minutes of the match, but they failed to find the net, so the match went to the extra time, which was dominated by a negative tie as well, to resort to penalty kicks, which witnessed a marathon that ended with the replacement goalkeeper Kepa wasting the last kick.
Joel Matip scored a goal for Liverpool, but the referee canceled it after referring to the video technology, in the 67th minute of the match for offside and a foul on Virgil van Dijk.
Romelu Lukaku also scored a goal for the Blues in the 98th minute of the match, but it was also canceled due to offside, the same with Haveritz’s goal in the 110th minute of the match.
Senegalese Sadio Mane missed a sure chance to score in the 30th minute of the match, which was saved by his compatriot Mendy with great skill.
Mason Mount missed a goal for Chelsea after hitting the ball into the Liverpool post in the 49th minute of the match.
Led by German coach Klopp, Liverpool won the ninth title to be the most English club to win the title, surpassing Manchester City, the runner-up, with 8 titles.
