Spanish press reports revealed that the French judiciary has set a new date for the retrial of star Karim Benzema in the case of extortion of his former teammate Matteo Valbuena after he was sentenced for the first time to a one-year suspended prison sentence.
The player will be tried on the thirtieth of next June, as judicial sources indicated that the new process will take place, like the previous one, in Versailles, on the outskirts of Paris, and is scheduled to last for two days.
The player’s lawyers have not confirmed at the present time whether Benzema will go to defend himself this time, after he was absent in the first trial, on the grounds of professional reasons, a position that the court strongly criticized.
Because of Benzema’s absence in the past, the court decided after the end of the season with Real Madrid, and therefore there will be no justification for his absence from the next session.
French striker Karim Benzema was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros in an inappropriate video case. Benzema’s lawyer told reporters on Wednesday that Benzema will appeal after being found guilty of complicity in the blackmail attempt.
The prosecution had previously requested Karim Benzema’s 10-month suspended prison sentence and a fine of 75,000 euros for the player for his involvement in the extortion of former teammate Matteo Valbuena in 2015 using an inappropriate video.
There are also four other people under trial in the Benzema case as well, they are Axel Agno, whom the prosecution requested 18 months’ imprisonment and a fine of 15,000 euros, in addition to Mustafa Al-Zawawi, 4 years in prison, and a fine of 15,000 euros, for being considered the leader of the gang, in addition to Younes Hawass, who spoke with Valbuena and did Blackmailing the player with 18 months’ imprisonment and a fine of 5,000 euros, and finally Karim Zenati, Benzema’s childhood friend, who is imprisoned for two years and a fine of 5,000 euros.
