Apple plans to include slightly larger wireless charging coil in this year’s iPhone 13 lineup.
The larger wireless charging coil results in better heat management and higher wattage. In addition, it may pave the way for reverse wireless charging.
According to rumors, Apple wants to make the physical wireless charging coil in upcoming iPhones larger, which then increases the surface area where wireless charging can be affected.
Leaker Max Weinbach had previously stated that the 2021 iPhones feature stronger MagSafe magnets. He now repeats that the stronger MagSafe magnets may be the reason behind the increased file size.
Weinbach also speculates that the larger wireless charging coil could be used for reverse wireless charging, enabling users to charge wireless charging-compatible devices, such as AirPods, by placing them on the back of an iPhone.
Bloomberg clarified in February that reverse wireless charging capabilities are unlikely to reach the iPhone in the near future.
Although Apple delayed announcing the feature officially, the FCC filings for the iPhone 2020 revealed earlier this year that all models of the iPhone 12 lineup include the ability to wirelessly mirror other devices, such as AirPods (2nd generation) or AirPods Pro Or the latest Apple Watch models.
Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning reverse wireless charging capabilities for the next-generation iPad Pro in 2022.
iPhone 13 features larger wireless charging coils
Reverse wireless charging greatly drains the device’s battery. As a result, Apple may feel that the feature may make sense in the iPad Pro thanks to its larger battery compared to the iPhone.
The new iPhone 13 models are expected to be released in September. But rumors about it started to surface before the iPhone 12 models of 2020.
The 2021 iPhone lineup looks similar to 2020 with four devices measuring 5.4, 6.1, and 6.7 inches. With two iPhones of the Pro class.
Furthermore, Apple will continue to rely on Lightning for the foreseeable future with no transition to USB-C. Plus there is no portless design so MagSafe accessories become more and more popular.
