Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation, stressed his need for support from his country’s government so that he can submit a file to the European Football Association “UEFA” to compete in the organization of the European Nations Cup “Euro 2032” before the deadline for receiving the files of the candidate countries expires.
“We need to submit a letter of intent for our candidacy by November 15,” the Italian federation president said during his remarks at the football summit held today in Rome.
Gravina added: “What we are asking is that the government support our bid to host the 2032 European Championship. I will not contact anyone.”
“My role is just to raise the issue and there will be a discussion with the new government, just as it was with the last government,” the FIGC president explained.
According to the newspaper “La Repubblica”, the Italians are looking for additional support in light of the recent decision by the management of the two clubs Inter and Milan to renew the famous “San Siro” stadium to join the modern stadiums that were built before the start of the World Cup. Italy hosted the last major men’s soccer tournament in 1990, a decade ago, while there were some Euro 2020 matches, including the opening match, in the Italian capital, Rome. Italy is the defending champion, having won Euro 2020, which was held in several places in Europe, Germany is set to host Euro 2024, while the UK and Ireland bid will be against Turkey at Euro 2028. Italy has hosted four major tournaments in men’s football and won two of them. In 1934, Italy won its first World Cup and its hosts, while also being champions the first time it won the Euro in 1968. But at Euro 80, they could only finish fourth, losing to Czechoslovakia in the match for third place, and third in Italy 90.
