- The 30-year-old youth squad extends his contract for one season with a 60% salary reduction and a clause of 400 million
- “Xavi showed confidence in me from the first moment. I will restore their confidence with results on the pitch”, highlights the man from Reus
- “We must continue rowing, helping, and contributing our grain of sand. I have already done it,” he said, referring to the reduction in his salary
It is already a reality. Sergi Roberto will play at FC Barcelona for at least one more season after extending his contractual relationship until June 30, 2023. The third captain of the Barça squad signed his new contract this Friday in the office of the president Joan Laporta with a salary reduction very substantial amounting to 60%. His salary will be five million euros gross. The termination clause has been estimated at 400 ‘kilos’, 100 less than what he had in the contract he signed in January 2018.
The one from Reus, who turned 30 on February 7, has attended the appointment in the company of his wife, Coral Simanovich, and his representative, Josep Maria Orobitg. There they have coincided with Rafa Yuste, Barça sports vice president, as well as Mateu Alemany, director of football, and Jordi Cruyff, a member of said department.
Sergi Roberto will start the preseason in this way on Monday, July 4 under the command of Xavi Hernández after a few months in which his continuity at the club was not at all clear until the insistence of the Egarense coach and the footballer’s yes to a reduction of the tab will bring about a turn in the situation.
The academy player, who will start his 13th season in the first team after making his debut at the Santiago Bernabéu on April 27, 2011, in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals, continues to feel at home at the Camp Nou and wants to return Xavi’s great confidence that he has placed in him after two seasons without having been able to play just due to two serious injuries. In 2020-21 he only played 20 official matches due to a tear in the rectus femoris of his right leg that he suffered in November at Atlético-Barça. And this campaign he has stayed in 12 games after being operated in December in Finland by Dr. Lasse Lempainen on the rectus femoris of his right leg. He relapsed in April and did not play again for the rest of the season.
After the extension of his contract, Roberto elaborated on this aspect: “I thank the club, the president, and the coach. Xavi told me to leave the injury behind and to have an operation and from the first moment, he showed confidence in me. He knew what I had suffered. I am very grateful to both the club and Xavi and I will restore their confidence with results on the pitch”.
Xavi, who has not been able to line him up yet, thinks that Sergi Roberto can be very useful in three positions: right back, midfielder, and inside.
The Catalan wants to win trophies again with the Barça first team, with whom he has won 21 titles, played 316 games, and scored 12 goals: “I am very happy to continue for another year. I have been here since I was 14 years old and I am 30 It’s been half a life at this club. It’s a dream to spend so many years at this club and I hope to enjoy it again and bring joy back to the fans”.
Sergi Roberto recalled his ‘via cruise: “The last two seasons have been difficult and I’ve had physical problems that haven’t allowed me to play 100% as I know-how on the pitch. Now I’ll be able to enjoy myself again with a new coach and I think that paints the thing very well”. Sergi also thanked the fans: “They have supported me in the most difficult moments”.
Maximum faith in Xavi
And in order to return the team to the top, he sent a clear message referring to his salary reduction at the club’s request given the club’s delicate financial situation: “It will be a very good season. We all have to be united, we know the situation in which the club is and we must continue rowing, helping, and contributing our grain of sand. I have already done it and from now on we must work one hundred percent to have a very good season. In the collective field, we started a season from scratch with Xavi. He arrived in the middle of the campaign and we worked things out with Xavi but it cost a little more and there were many points behind the first one. Let’s also see the new signings that arrive and we must be strong and I am convinced that with Xavi and his coaching staff It will go very well.”
