- Kounde: “Xavi is a big part of me coming to Barca”
Jules Kounde is already in Barcelona and will be an FC Barcelona player. The Barca club and Sevilla FC announced this Thursday the principle of the agreement for the transfer of the French defender (23 years old) while waiting to sign the contract and the pertinent medical review, thus using the same formula as with the signing of Robert Lewandowski. Figures were not published, although the signing will be around 50 million fixed euros plus about 10 variables for the operation carried out in recent days after a script twist last Friday. Although there was the option, he will not join the Barcelona concentration in New York directly and that is why he has traveled to Barcelona, where it could be presented next Monday.
Kounde‘s will has always been to play at the Camp Nou after having been convinced by Xavi Hernández, a great supporter of his signing and the architect of his giving Chelsea a squash when the English club had almost everything agreed with Sevilla for his operation. The 11-time ‘bleu’ international preferred to travel to Lagos, the Portuguese Algarve, with the Andalusian team at the ‘stage’ waiting for events and for negotiations between Barca and Sevilla to crystallize, which will thus close the biggest sale of his story. Until now, Wissam Ben Yedder transferred to Monaco in 2019 for 40 million, and Clement Lenglet, sold to Barcelona in 2018 for 35.9 ‘kilos’, lead the ranking.
Until Monday, the first Barcelona offer for Kounde was not formalized three days after closing the sale to Sixth Street for some 315 million euros of 15% of LaLiga ‘s TV rights for the next 25 years. Activating the second ‘lever’, the defender verified with realities and not just words that Barca had the financial muscle to face the operation.
Kounde will leave Sanchez Pizjuan three seasons after landing as the most expensive signing in the history of the Seville club for 25 ‘kilos’ from Girondins de Bordeaux. At Barca, he is called to mark an era in the context of reconstruction of the defense with the signing of Christensen (26 years old), Eric Garcia (21) a season ago and the renewal of Ronald Araujo (22) until 2026. Gerard Pique (35) completes the list of central defenders in the Barca team.
Since he arrived in November to take over the Barca bench, Xavi wrote Kounde ‘s name as a goal to prop up the axis of the rearguard. The Frenchman was able to go out to Chelsea last summer but Sevilla was closed in the band, as in January when Newcastle joined the bid. This time the ‘blues’ have pressed hard but Kounde has waited, as he wanted and Barca had asked him, for there to be ‘cash’ in the culés coffers. His patience has been worth it and from the Camp Nou, they have not failed him.
Once the arrival of the Parisian defender is closed, FC Barcelona‘s plan is now to prop up the sides. The next targets are Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso. The Navarrese is more of a priority and the contact between Barca and Chelsea is maintained despite the fact that the Catalan club has won the game again as it did with the signing of Raphinha, whom Arsenal also wanted, and even with Christensen, whom they were unable to retain at Stamford Bridge. The ‘blues’ also made vain attempts for Lewandowski and Dembele.
With two and a half weeks to go to start LaLiga against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, August 13 (9:00 p.m.) at Camp Nou, the work of the sports management, with Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff at the helm, is more than fulfilling the requests from Xavi, who will have a squad to fight for all possible titles.
