For some users of Apple devices, in-app purchases can be very annoying, especially parents who try to prevent their children from spending money on buying games all the time, and in general we find that many people have many reasons to stop in-app purchases on their devices especially At certain times of the year, such as: holidays.
Although Apple does not explain in detail how to do this, there are some methods that you can use to block in-app purchases on iPhone and iPad:
1- Using Screen Time feature:
The most effective way to prevent or block in-app purchases will be hidden within the Screen Time feature settings, to do so, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings on iPhone or iPad.
- Tap on the Screen Time option.
- If this is your first time using the feature you will have to set it up, so tap on the Turn On Screen Time option to start.
- Click on the Continue option.
- Click This is My device or My Child device.
Note: If this device is for your child, you can set up the feature and adjust settings directly in his device, or you can use the Family Sharing feature to configure your child’s device via your device.
- In either case, you will be required to create a special passcode to control these particular settings, and if for your child there are some additional questions.
2- Turn Off Purchase Options:
After setting up Screen Time, you can now set restrictions on in-app purchases within the settings for this feature itself, to do so, follow these steps:
- On the Screen Screen Time feature itself, toggle the button next to the Content & Privacy Restrictions option to On.
- Enter the passcode you created earlier when prompted.
- Tap on the iTunes & App Store Purchases option.
- On the screen that appears, click the In-App Purchases option.
- On the next screen, select Don’t Allow option, thus preventing purchases from all third-party apps on this device.
3- Lock Apple Store apps:
The option to block in-app purchases is only designed to work with third-party purchasing systems, not Apple’s systems, which means you can still buy things from places like the iTunes Store or Apple Books.
This might not be a concern for some users who are mostly worried about their kids’ games, but some users may want to block in-app purchases on their device as much as possible, to do so, follow these steps:
- Go back to the Content & Privacy Restrictions option on the same screen.
- Click the Allowed Apps option.
- You will see a list of apps that you can uncheck to turn them off.
- Uncheck the apps you want to stop purchases.
4- Turn on the Ask to Buy feature:
Activating the Ask To Buy feature allows you to receive a notification every time a family member wants to make a purchase, where you can review the main details related to this process immediately, and choose whether or not to agree to it or wait for a decision. To activate this feature, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap on your name at the top, then tap on the Family Sharing option.
- On the screen that appears, click Ask To Buy.
- Click on the name of the person concerned, on the screen that appears, toggle the button next to Ask To Buy option to On.
5- Refund of purchase amount from Apple:
If you find that someone used your device to make a lot of in-app purchases, you can ask Apple to recover these amounts, but remember you should implement this as soon as possible if you discover this, to do so, follow these steps:
- Go to this link, then log in.
- You will see a list of all recent purchases made to this account.
- Find the purchase you don’t want, then click the Report a Problem option next to Purchase.
- Choose the reason you want to get a refund for this purchase, then hit Send.
